Oakwood Park Equestrian
Boutique Equestrian Centre in the Adelaide Hills
ABOUT OAKWOOD PARK
Oakwood Park was built in the 1960’s, and the property now runs as a small equestrian centre with the original indoor riding arena, as well as offering our barn conversion cottage as quaint bed and breakfast accommodation.
The Starr family took over Oakwood Park in 2004, and in the years since have focused on regenerating the land for better grass cover and nourishment. A renovation of the property’s cottage, originally a small dairy, has created a fantastic B&B with stunning views across the Onkaparinga valley.
The Starr family currently reside at Oakwood Park in a new house on the hill, where they have a passion for providing holistic care for the horses and land around them.
Agistment
Oakwood Park offers both short and long term agistment options. Facilities include stables, yards, electrified paddocks with shelters, and indoor & outdoor arenas.

REGENERATIVE FARMING PRACTICES
For many years the Starrs have been implementing and testing regenerative agriculture practices to improve the land. A large inspiration for this is Peter Andrew’s ‘Natural Sequence Farming‘ which has featured in two ABC Australian Series episodes.
Natural Sequence Farming
While Peter Andrew's methods typically use lots of earthworks to repair the flow of water, at Oakwood Park we built up instead, creating swales out of ruined hay bales and compost and planting trees into them. This prevents water from quickly rushing over the top of the soil, contributing to erosion, and instead encourages water to soak into the soil where it can be used by plants and refill aquifers.
Low chemical use
As part of the natural decomposition cycle, we pride ourselves on having dung beetles to help get rid of horses manure. This fertilises the ground, and saves us some hard work!
Unfortunately there are many agricultural chemicals that can kill off dung beetles, so for this reason and others we commit to low chemical use and in particular not using ivermectin wormers on our horses.
